I’ve heard a lot about this legendary restaurant on my many trips to the French capital but never had the chance to try it before. I’ve heard about the Jazz mood and the good food, but I wasn’t prepared to enter such a gigantic space, full of life and enjoyment.

In the heart of the capital, few steps away from the Champs Elysees, Le Boeuf sur le Toit welcomes you into a huge establishment divided into three distinct areas: The welcoming hall, the back dining area and the balcony up on the first floor. A fresh well lit space, decorated with lots of mirrors, wood and orange leather on a floor covered with yet more wood. As you walk in, you’ll know in advance that the experience will be unique.

A legendary spot for jazz music, Le Bœuf sur le Toit combines elegance and an Art Deco soul. With beautiful Art Deco designs and a warm feel created by the jazz, the restaurant seatsup to a hundred guests at a time in a relaxed space under the very high ceiling.

With passion and talent, the chefs regularly update their menu to keep pace with the seasons. Thon mariné au curcuma, foie de veau poêlé, gambas sauvages rôties… Each dish is a balance of originality and class. Le Bœuf sur le Toit is the embodiment of a typical Right Bank brasserie, where every bite tells of the freshness and quality of its products.

Some notes on the decor:

  • The restaurant is vast and offers a very high ceiling that’s relaxing for the eyes and soul.
  • Choose to sit in the main dining hall, the back closed space or up on the first or second floors overlooking the jazz players down below.
  • Real wood panels cover all the floors.
  • Well lit, the orange leather sofas add a touch of modernism and class.
  • A full cutlery set waits for you on rectangular tables covered with beige and white table setups.
  • Look around, the mirrors will make you feel like you’re sitting in a ballroom.

Tonight’s dinner:

  • Dinner started with an amuse bouche. A special lentil soup that’s different from the one we know. It’s not brown or watery, but thick and green. Smooth on the palate, every sip was enjoyable. On the side, salted puff pastry sticks are ready to be dipped in and enjoyed. A great first impression. Afterwards, was salad time. Fresh crabmeat with avocado and mango in lime seasoned in a cold tomato soup. A cylinder loaded with fresh crab and avocados, decorated with diced mangos and some Granny Smith apples, combined they offer pure enjoyment.
  • Now for the meat, the grilled Hereford rump steak and Dauphinois potatoes was great. Served with green pepper sauce and a decorative grilled tomato on the side, the meat is so tender, it cuts so smoothly under your teeth.

Desserts were awesomely mouthwatering. Just imagine raspberry sauce where a scoop of ice cream baths and which is topped with a thin, crunchy sable biscuit decorated with a portion of pastry cream and a dried lemon confit. The textures, the flavors, the taste… I loved this dessert and its simplicity.

Our dinner tonight was enjoyed by all. A group of 10 people had fun, ate good food, and enjoyed the music and the wine. I’ll be coming back next time I’m in Paris.
