Penelope comes highly recommended as you search for one of the best breakfasts in New York... after a whole night suffering from jet lag, I was craving some eggs. They say Penelope is a local favorite that offers comfort food. Walk in for enticing smells, soothing music, dimmed lights... I felt good as soon as I walked in.
At this neighbourhood cafe, choose one of their several egg choices, the famous BLT, pancakes or French toast. The lighter versions include granola and oatmeal.
The place looks like home. It feels warm and welcoming as you step in and walk on its squeaky wooden floor. Sit near one of the four windows with a view onto the busy neighbourhood... or choose to sit at the bar for a drink.
The food is good!
- The lentils and eggs are made of crispy smoked lentil and barley cakes with scrambled eggs. They're served with pineapple salsa, smoked chilli and a choice of toast. I loved the bread served with the plate, the moisture of the eggs and the unique taste the lentil cakes offer.
- Buttermilk pancakes; fluffy pillows dusted with powdered sugar and served with fresh seasonal fruits. Awesome and extremely fluffy pancakes ready to put a smile on your face. Like a pillow, airy and lightly sweet. A bite, another, a third... I couldn't stop enjoying it!
- BLT... double bacon, over medium egg, green leaf lettuce, tomato, and black pepper balsamic mayo on sourdough, served with hand cut fries. It's an amazing choice! Lovely bread, extremely crispy bacon chips which are tasty and enjoyably salty, fresh lettuce, molten fried eggs and a fresh tomato.
Bravo for such great food! I loved the plates and the love poured into them, the choices, the innovations, the superb taste! Indeed one of the best breakfasts you can have in New York City.
