Located on the Antelias internal road is Mashawi Al Amir, a place they say, serves tasty sandwiches. Let's see.
A one-door shop where the shawarma is displayed along the road and inside one chef rolls all the sandwiches. They're not smiling or welcoming in here, but who cares, it’s a typical street food shop with hundreds of customers coming in every hour.
The first room hosts the shawarma and display of chicken, and inside is where all the work is done. A large cash desk, a drinks fridge and another fridge containing many sweets, including the largest éclair I've seen to date, for only LBP3,000.
I wished someone could answer my question, "What is the most popular sandwich you have?" The staff kept on repeating that it’s all tasty. So I decided to try the chicken sandwich, the meat sandwich and the Kabab on one single slice of bread... Be prepared to be welcomed by a cashier chatting on WhatsApp, and a place that's not as clean as it should be...
While standing there for 15 minutes I got to see what people like, what they order and how they like their sandwiches... One asked for an overdose of tomato, another was eating a basterma sandwich on the way to work, while another orders double of everything... but one order left me amazed and that was the raw habra with garlic, I couldn't imagine eating that in my lifetime.
Now for my sandwiches.
- The chicken sandwich, which came with an overdose of mayonnaise, was a bit dry in my opinion. Even though we ordered it with only one layer of bread it was still too thick and too chewy.
- The meat was way too fatty, extremely chewy with an aftertaste that's not enjoyable at all. Huge pieces of chewy meat with cartilage pieces that were not pleasant to feel under the teeth.
- The Kabab, which was the only one that was not toasted on the menu. With hummos, there was nothing special about it.
So people say this place offers good sandwiches? I'm not sure what's good about it.
