When I read “Plane Food”, I freaked out; what a cheap name I said to myself. But wait, don’t judge too quickly, I walked into an elegant restaurant serving a non-complicated refined menu prepared by the famous Gordon Ramsey. Gordon Ramsey Plane Food or Grab&Go, two concepts in one. Lunch with a view on the tarmac, a bar and an open kitchen in a classy setup decorated with light-colored wood, camel leather, and long benches. A classy setup you usually don’t find at airports.
Grab a seat and browse the menu: nibbles, raw bar, small plates, salads, noodles, mains and sides with a selection of breakfasts and an express menu. Gordon Ramsey has another interesting idea called Picnics; short of time, take your food on the plane. A choice of a starters, mains and desserts prepared in a box.
Food is good:
- California rolls with fresh crab on top, crunchy sesame and tobiko prepared with hard textured not chewy rice.
- The burrata is much more than simple food; a creamy burrata prepared with truffle oil, fresh pomegranate, crunchy almonds and toasted focaccia on the side. Outstanding to say the least, the bread fluffiness, the textures, the burrata quality and the elevated flavors of truffles, olive oil, and roasted almonds. That’s incredibly tasty! Usually, burratas have a blunt taste needing olive oil and pepper as a seasoning; this out of the box creation with almonds and truffle oil makes it one of the best I’ve ever had.
- Spicy yellowfin tuna on a bed of creamy crème fraîche; quality and taste of gourmet Japanese restaurants served at the airport. I loved the details, the sesame added on top, the texture of the crème fraîche, the tuna and the crunchy crips.
- Mac and cheese, as simple as this plate is, macaroni and melting cheese served hot: comfort food and satisfaction guaranteed. It’s so good!
Best for last; imagine a pretty thick chunk of British short rib beef served with Monterrey jack cheese and chimichurri mayo. A gourmet burger where no ketchup or sweetness is felt, a juicy patty, a tender bread, fresh vegetables and well cooked bacon. Yummy! And the gigantic potato wedges they call chips are as good!
Pleasantly surprised; a must try at Heathrow Terminal 5 Airport.
