Rome airport Fiumicino or Leonardo da Vinci airport of Rome is Italy’s first airport and Europe’s sixth where traffic volume is concerned. It is Italy's largest airport with 37.7 million passengers served in 2011. It is located in Fiumicino, 35.0 km southwest of Rome's historic city centre, and is linked to the city by train and by road. The ride by train lasts approximately 30 minutes and goes as far as the central railway station of Rome, Termini. The airport incorporates 3 passenger stations and offers services of a great variety, such as convention facilities, conference rooms, banks, coffee shops, restaurants and shops selling both local Italian products and international goods.
Domestic flights depart from passenger station Terminal A, domestic and international flights from Terminal B and transatlantic flights from Terminal C. Located between the various coffee shops and restaurants you will find some 130 stores selling gifts, clothing, souvenirs and much more.
Information desks are located in each terminal of the Rome Airport. APT provides tourist information desks (tel: 665951). Information kiosks with touch-screen technology and videoconferencing with an operator are situated in Terminal A (Departures and Arrivals), the service is free of charge.
Rome Airport ADR
Rome airport Fiumicino officially opened on January 15, 1961 with two runways, replacing the small Rome Ciampino Airport which remained in service for domestic and charter operations. During the decade Alitalia invested heavily on the new airport, building hangars and maintenance centers; in the same period a third runway was added..
Most of changes came about in the early 1970s when the two existing runways were lengthened and construction work started on a third. The international terminal was extended but with 50 companies providing services at Fiumicino rationalization was needed.
In 1974 all airport services were brought together under the present operator, Aeroporti di Roma, which became responsible for development and growth.
In 2007 ADR total traffic in Rome airports Fiumicino and Ciampino C hit about 38 million passengers: 150 destinations worldwide may be reached from Rome city, by the 160 airlines operating in the two airports.
Shopping:
There are duty-free shops in the airport’s passenger station C. You will also find stores like Roma Travel Shop, Fabriano, Venchi, Imaginarium, Tendenze, Tutto-All-Items and Riva.
In passenger station A you will find many restaurants and coffee shops, like Mc Donalds, Pizza Chef, Harry's Bar, Gran Chef Ristorante, Sport Village Cafe and Bar Tazza d'Oro. In passenger station B are located the Ciao, Spizzico, Sandwich Cafe, Transiti Cafe and in passenger station C the Panoramic, Gran Cafe Goodbye Roma, Gran Cafe Panorama, Frescobaldi Wine Bar êáé The Duck & Dog's Pub.
Airlines Lounges:
British Airways has its lounge on the 2nd floor of Terminal C. Alitalia has lounges in all 3 passenger stations, Air France on the 3rd floor of Terminal B, Italitour in Terminal C and Cisalpina on the 1st floor of Terminal A. In Departures, in Terminal A, there is a lounge for people with disabilities (Sala Amica) that is managed by Alitalia and where the other airlines also make reservations.
