With a 4.3/5 on google maps and a nice photo showing an open kitchen, there’s smoothing that brought me to Margo’s. An Italian restaurant in Valletta operating under an old stone arcade, enter a design space where a big sign on the wall states; “Who is Margo”?. It seems the owner is an artist. Wait until you’ve opened the menu.
Creative, the menu is not like any I’ve read before, and it gave me some ideas. The menu doesn’t state ingredients and doesn’t have photos but tells stories of every plate and why Margo is the best at cooking it. Claiming the best, the best of everything, the best food, and the best pizzas, you will smile while reading without feeling it pretentious
On the menu; read the “we are the best,” perfect authentic pizza page not found anywhere else. Continue to the “no mushroom,” mushroom explosion spaghetti. The “Sfilatino,” a premiere for me. Pizzas from all sides of life and the “Calzone” which they make perfectly to look like a Napoleon hat. All plates can be ordered in big and small sized plates.
Calm and relaxing, the restaurant is not known much by tourists; away from the busy street of drinks and visitors, walk 100 meters from St. George’s square in the heart of Valletta and reach Margo’s.
I was so excited, so happy to be here until I had my first bite; average food any person would cook. I didn’t feel any love, anything exceptional about the plates. My spaghetti Pomodoro is overcooked, the mushroom spaghetti is good enough. The cheese sandwich lacks olive oil, sauce, and love! There’s a lack of passion in all plates. Where’s the Italian touch, the love, the passion, the Mediterranean freshness, and happiness? Deceiving food, good for an average tourist who’s not expecting culinary extravaganza. PS: why the leaks in the mushroom spaghetti? They add an unpleasant texture. The overall flavor of the plate tastes like burning.
Pizzas: way too complicated! A handful of complicated ingredients put together in an unorganized way, tricking your taste buds. I asked the leaks and onions to be removed from the pizza, and yet it is too much! Too many ingredients, too many complicated and unpleasant flavors in one. The dough on another hand is tender but soaked and hard to handle.
- Food: not good.
- The chef: doesn’t understand his ingredients.
- The temperature of the restaurant: too hot.
- Service: good.
I’ll come back: unfortunately not.
